The Inverse Square Law . . . you can’t beat the laws of physics
The HeliosTM System is the only evidence-based UV-C hard surface disinfection solution that is designed to overcome the demands presented by the Inverse Square Law. Now, we don’t expect you to remember the laws of physics from your university days; however, what you do need to understand is that as distance increases, the amount of energy delivered to the surface is considerably reduced e.g. by a factor of 4.
The simplicity of this universal law is its greatest strength
Without delving into the exact formulation of the Inverse Square Law of Light and the implications of how energy is delivered, here is a clear and practical explanation of the impact of understanding this principle
Let’s say we have a light source 1 meter away from a high touch surface. If we move our light source 2x the distance away from the light (2 meters), how much of the light’s energy will reach the surface? Many are inclined to think “1/2 the power” – but unfortunately that’s not how the delivery of UV-C energy works.Light and its energy are inversely proportional to the square of the distance from the origin of the light . . . So, if we return to our example: by doubling the distance (2x) from the light source, the energy of the light is decreased to ¼ of the original power – not 1/2. Extending this law, moving our light source 3 meters from the surface, the power of our light now becomes 1/9th of the original power.
With this understanding, it becomes clear that single emitting light sources are no match for the Surfacide® system. Many have told us this video helps with understanding the inverse square law. Let us know what you think.
